Review Of English Movie Tuner : A Suttle Crime Thriller

I

Director : Daniel Roher

Star Cast :Leo Woodall, Dusting Hoffman, Havana Rose Liu

Overview: Tuner is a sharp, atmospheric, and highly engaging crime thriller

The story follows Niki Wright (Leo Woodall), a young man possessing a rare gift: perfect pitch. He works as an apprentice to Harry Horowitz (Dustin Hoffman), a genial, fatherly piano repairman. However, Niki’s gift comes with a debilitating curse—hyperacusis, a condition that makes everyday environmental sounds excruciatingly painful. He navigates the world tightly sealed behind earbuds and noise-canceling headphones.

Niki encounters a rotating cast of clients, including Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu), a keen piano student who challenges his moral complexity.

When Harry forgets the combination to a safe in his own home, Niki discovers that his hyper-sensitive hearing allows him to effortlessly hear the minute mechanical clicks of the dial. He can crack safes.

When security contractor Uri (Lior Raz) learns Niki’s hypersensitive hearing is worth more for cracking safes than for opening Yamahas, he offers Niki a dangerous opportunity that could help Harry and his devoted wife Marla (Tovah Feldshuh) manage their suffocating medical debt.

As Niki is drawn deeper into the criminal underworld with Uri and his crew, his relationship with Ruthie is threatened, entangling him in a dangerous side hustle that gives his life some unfortunate obstacles. All this forms the crux of the movie

Technical Performance: Directed by Oscar-winning documentarian Daniel Roher (Navalny), making his narrative feature debut, the film delivers a novel and sensory-rich experience that relies on tension and precision rather than loud, explosive action.

What truly sets Tuner apart from a standard heist movie is its extraordinary sound design, crafted by Oscar-winner Johnnie Burn

Performances: Leo Woodall Carries the film effortlessly. He plays Niki not as a slick, cool criminal, but as an anxious, socially awkward bundle of nerves who is confident only when executing his specific craft.

Dustin Hoffman Brings a lovely, “happy-go-lucky senior” warmth to the screen, serving as the emotional anchor and father figure Niki desperately needs.

Lior Raz: Is incredibly compelling as Uri, perfectly balancing a friendly approach with a terrifyingly sharp “stick” when things get intense.

Final Words : Aside from a slightly abrupt ending, it is a beautifully tuned, deeply immersive thriller that proves you don’t need massive explosions to create agonizing suspense.
