Overview: Batwara 1947 tackles the emotional trauma and human cost of India’s Partition
Storyline: : The story is set in Lahore , immediately following the 1947 Partition, the movie revolves around Sikandar Mirza a Muslim (Sunny Deol), who is initially from meerut but on eve of independence vwgwn India is celebrating its independence on one hand and on second hand communal riots break in , Sikander is advised to migrate to Lahore alongwith his family Amidst the riots Sikander reaches station with his family consisting of wife Hamida (Preity G Zinta), son Javed (Karan Deol) and daughter Tanno (Khhushi Hajare), makes his way to the railway station. After a harrowing journey, the family reaches Lahore and takes shelter in a relief camp. With facing lots of harrasment, Sikander is alloted a abandoned haveli he movie in there with his family, only to find an elderly Hindu woman, Mai (Shabana Azmi), still living there.
.She reveals that she is the original owner of the haveli and has no intention of leaving her home. Sikandar and his family try to persuade her to migrate to India, but she firmly refuses to leave . At first there was a lot of hostility between Mai and Sikander family but slowly due to Mai’s dignity and grief , Mai secretly helps Sikander to set up his business by giving him a place to start his factory but Sikander comes to know about it , from thereon Mai becomes close to Sikander and his family , Sikander treats her as his own mother and due to it he faces lots of communal hate particularly by Yajub Khan ( Abhimanyu Singh ) , who has an ulterior motive he attempt to evict Mai and incite communal violence, Sikandar steps up to protect her at all costs.
All this forms crux of the movie.
Technical Review : The movie is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhya. Director Rajkumar Santoshi directs the movie in an simplistic giving :A timely message of human empathy over religious bigotry in a very Suttle way , he handles the religious sentiment very sensitively and in such a manner that viewers of all faiths will appreciate it. Though first half is little dragging but second half has all the drama and lhigh emotions .The story is compelling , hard hitting and emotional .The screenplay is good though editing could have been more crispier
Performances :Sunny Deol delivers a commanding screen presence and earnest dialogue delivery. Preity Zinta and Ali Fazal offer solid supporting beats. Shaban Azmi is too good delivering an highly emotional role which will touch your heart deeply .Abimanyu Singh as the villian is totally bollywood style .
Final Words : Batwara 1947 is a well-intentioned, deeply emotional Partition storyi.There are no high octane action sequences but slow motion sequences .
