Review Of English Movie Woman King – A stirring Warrior Film

Stars: Viola Davis, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu

Writers: Maria Bello, Dana Stevens

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood

Overview : An epic movie based on african history  which will give their lead actors a great chance to shine, with a ton of action .

Storyline : The Woman King tells the story of the Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th century to the 19th. It follows General Nanisca (Viola Davis) fighting for her king Ghezo (John Boyega) against the Oyo Empire, who collaborated with Europeans in the slave trade.

. Dahomey’s anger over the Oyo Empire’s engagement in the slave trade is, notably, complicated by the fact that it and its leaders have similarly accumulated great wealth by capturing and selling their fellow Africans into slavery. This fact weighs heavy on Davis’ Nanisca, and while the rivalry between Dahomey and the Oyo Empire is the source of The Woman King’s biggest action sequences and set pieces, it gradually becomes clear that the film’s villain is not the Oyo Empire, but the slave trade itself.

After refusing to marry an abusive man, young Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) is offered by her father to the Agojie. The headstrong Nawi soon butts heads with Nanisca, but as the rookie develops in her training, her relationship with the general grows more complex, challenging the two in ways they could never have imagined.

Thereon the story focuses on the training for war with neighbouring oyo empire and others who are into slave trade , irradication of the same forms the crux of the movie.

Technical Review : Director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees) shows a terrific flair for action scenes with ancient weapons . She also wisely lingers on the soldiers’ training regimen, convincing us that these women really could take on an army of hulking men  and win. The cinematography is brilliant covering each and every frame to perfection

Final Words : The Woman King is a fantastic film, offering great character drama and stylish visuals, strengthened by the hard work of a talented cast.A must watch this weekend
