Storyline :Real Pain follows cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin)  who meet after a long time as they journey to their grandmother’s ancestral home in Poland following her death.  David is a digital marketer and stays in New York with his wife and child .Whereas Benji still stays with his parents and out of job . As the two join a Holocaust heritage tour led by guide James (Will Sharpe), old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family’s history. The once-close cousins, now estranged, must navigate their complicated relationship while confronting their family’s painful history and their own cultural identities. David is an introvert and Benji is overt and most of the time vocal about the pain their ancestors had to go through.

The interaction between these two is the film’s soul, but the other interesting subplot is the tour itself.  They visit a series of locations across Poland as their knowledgeable English guide (Sharpe) provides a history lesson.  It culminates with an emotional trip to the Majdanek concentration camp near Lublin.  Recalling the atrocities that took place there in the 1940s provides perspective on the trivial issues of today we tend to hype.

The pain of the ancestors and challenges of today’s times forms the crux of the movie.

Performances : Emmy winner Kieren Culkin  is incredible as Benji.  His character is described as someone who lights up a room. There are moments on the tour when he’s warm, chatty and friendly but then, just as quickly, he transforms into one who is blunt, rude, and self-centred.  He doesn’t realise he’s doing it either and those around him don’t know how to react.

David finds himself apologising on a daily basis for Benji’s bipolar-like behaviour but, worst of all, he’s suppressing his own problems.  This is partly because he’s a natural introvert  but also because Benji’s more overt “cry for help” usually takes centre stage.  It explains the reason why he’s avoided Benji in recent years., .Playing this introvert character to perfection.

Final Words : Content is different and cannot be missed.
