Storyline : The story is based in Dehradhun wherein Shardul (RajjkumarRao) , is a policeman working at police station that has maximum female staff..Like any indian family , Shardul’s parents also wants him to marry and settle down..He meets Sumi (Bhumi Pednekar ) who is a physical training teacher, and a huge disappointment to her mother..Her mother doesn’t like her job and her dressing sense , and wants her to get married asap..When Shardul abd Sumi’s cross paths, something happens where their secrets are out to each other. Shardul is a gay and Sumi is lesbian but they both have hidden their sexuality from their respective parents and the world..Shardul and Sumi decide to get married a marriage of convenience to escape their family’s pressure and they also decide that they will stay as roommates after marriagd .After marriage the two stay far away from their families so the chances of not getting caught are high. Sumi is enjoying life with Rimjhim (Chum Darang ) and Shardul with a lawyer played by Gulshan Devaih t life brings in many surprises in their lives. Everything was running smoothly for a year but when they had to attend some family function they were nagged by relatives to have kids , so much so that Shardul’s Mother accompanied him to stay with them . From thereon roller coaster ride of begins .For how long one can stay in a pretend marriage? Will they ever come out of the closet? How will their families react when they come to know is for audience to watch.
Technical Review : Director Harshavardhan Kulkarni has attempted a very bold subject with this film..He has presented the movie on a simple and clean way .Harshvardhan Kulkarni’s has shown the struggles and life of the LGBTQA community to be accepted by the society in a very subtle and sensible way…
Performances : Rajkummar Rao has totally done justice to his role , His macho body with sensitive feelings he has potrayed to perfection..Bhumi Pednekar has also done a good job as a fearless girl who wont accept any nonsense from anybody and live life according to her own terms. Chum darang is daring enougj to play such a role in her debut..Other cast is good as per their role.
The music is good of the movie , though the first half is very slow and the movie picks up in second half ..It also has some fun moments too .
Final Words : It takes a lots of guts to present such movies with such sensitve subject, The Supreme Court may have decriminalized homosexuality, but society still sees it as disease. In such an environment, Badhaai Do becomes an important film of today’s era because it is about the community settled among the people of our society, we need to understand them.. Badhaai Do takes the initiative to normalize such characters.
